FMCA Chapter: Habitat for Humanity® Build Report

MOORE COUNTY AFFILIATE, NORTH CAROLINA
SEPTEMBER 29 – OCTOBER 10, 2003

Submitted by Team Leaders
Corbett and Connie Pool on October 13, 2003

Twenty four volunteers from the FMCA Chapter: Habitat for Humanity participated in the building of a home for Tom and Melissa Kunik and their four boys in Aberdeen, NC before attending the FMCA Greater Eastern Area Rally (GEAR) in Ashville, NC.

We arrived back for our fourth year with the Moore County affiliate and the affiliate again had the foundation ready and all materials were on site. Our first day on the build was exciting as the team turned to and the walls went up in no time. By the third day we set trusses. We then split the team doing flooring, cabinet installation and painting in houses that are to be dedicated next month. We also had a member help with foundation block work on two new housing starts. The remaining members continued on roofing, blue board, soffits, front and side porches, and building of the shed. We had an accident free build.

This build has become a very popular build, usually filling up on the first day of registration with two on the waiting list. We had two cancellations so those on the waiting list were put on the build. We returned to the Pinehurst RV Park again this year as the park manger continued to offer us a greatly reduced camping fee. We had the complete use of an excellent outdoor pavilion during our stay where we hosted a cookout for the affiliate and new homeowners, the Kunik’s. April Dunston and her children (we built her house two years ago) also joined us. Eight affiliate members and their families participated.

The local community provided excellent support for our build team with many churches, businesses and individuals provided us with morning snacks and lunches for all our workdays. The Moore County HFH Board of Directors hosted a farewell lunch again at Kelly’s Antique Car Museum. We toured the museum after lunch. The Kelly family also provided the seed money for the Kunik family home. The affiliate concluded the luncheon with a request for us to return again next year. The build team was overwhelmed by the Southern hospitality.

We had ten workdays, scheduled 8am to 3:30pm. On Wednesday, Oct 8th, 19 members worked only to 10:30am when we were rained out.
