SEDALIA BUILD REPORT

The Sedalia Build Team arrived at the Missouri State Fairground campground September 3& 4, 2001. The campground had full hookups and we had a group rate of $10 per night. The team consisted of 5 coaches the entire time, one coach for five days and one coach for four days.

The very successful Sedalia Build was kicked off Tuesday, September 4,2001, with a welcoming and introductory dinner at the First Baptist Church in Sedalia Missouri. The dinner was furnished by the Church and prepared by Church members, and was delicious. .Jim Hibbard, president of the Sedalia affiliate welcomed the Build Team and expressed appreciation for their help. Charlie Siler gave a brief description of FMCA and FMCA Chapter:Habitat for Humanity for the benefit of the attendees and introduced the Team Members. Also in attendance were most of the Affiliate Board Members, as well as the future owners of the two houses under construction.

The build involved two houses on adjacent lots .The first house was already under construction and the drywall and siding had been started. The second house was a bare slab with all the ‘sticks’ lying nearby. Working hours were 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday, and Monday though Friday the second week.

The actual build started Wednesday morning. September 5,2001. Three teams were formed. One team started framing the outside walls of house number 2. A second team started building the window and door headers, and corners. The third team began finishing the drywall for house number 1. By the end of the day two of the outside walls of house number 2 were up and installation of drywall in house number 1 was progressing.

Progress on house number 2 is best illustrated by the pictures shown below, which were taken at the end of each day. By noon of day 9, house number 2 was under a completed roof with all interior walls in place. The drywall and siding on house number 1 was complete. The build team departed the build site mid-afternoon on day 9 (September 15,2001).

In addition to our build team, several of the Affiliate Board members helped with the construction, as did the construction supervisor. Also on two afternoons, three students from the local vocational high school helped out.

A farewell dinner was held Friday evening,(Sept 15), attended by 5 of the 7 build team couples and several Affiliate board members and the construction supervisor. The remainder of the Build Fee’s of $42 was donated to the Affiliate.

This report would not be complete without a special word of thanks to the local Affiliate for all they did in support of our build team. The cooperation was out-standing. In addition a big thank you to all of the volunteers who provided break time snacks and delicious lunches.
